The "Find and Replace" tool in Microsoft Word is a text-editing powerhouse. While simple on the surface, it allows for sophisticated edits if you know how to use it. Here is a definitive guide to replacing text in a single document.
The Shortcut Method
The fastest way to open the dialog is via keyboard shortcuts:

Command + Shift + H

Step-by-Step Instructions
- Open your Word document.
- Press
Ctrl + Hor go to the Home tab and click Replace in the Editing group. - In the Find what box, type the text you want to search for.
- In the Replace with box, type the new text.
- Click Find Next to locate the first instance.
- Click Replace to change it, or Find Next to skip it.
- To change everything at once, click Replace All.
Advanced Options
Click the More >> button to see advanced filters:
- Match case: Distinguishes between "Apple" and "apple".
- Find whole words only: Prevents replacing "cat" inside "category".
- Use wildcards: Allows for pattern matching (advanced users only).
The Limitation
This method is perfect for one file. But what if you have 50 files? Opening each one, running Ctrl+H, and saving is incredibly slow.
Need to edit multiple files?
Microsoft Word doesn't support batch find & replace natively. Use our free tool instead.
